Lesson 1 Songkran Festival_Language Focus

Let's practice Role Play using the following language focus as follows:

 Language Focus:
  • What does ‘Songkran’ mean?
    • It is a Sanskrit word, meaning the transformation of the zodiac signs.

  • When is the Songkran Festival?

    • It is on April 13th to 17th.
  • ·       How long do people in northern Thailand celebrate Songkran Festival?
  •     How long does the Songkran Festival lasts?

    • It usually lasts five days from April 13th to 17th.
    • We celebrate the festival for five days from April 13th to 17th.

  • How do people celebrate the Songkran Festival? / What do people do to celebrate the Songkran Festival? / What do people do on the following three days?
    • They clean their houses.

    • They take part in a procession of the revered Buddha image.

    • They carry sand to a nearby temple to form pagodas and decorate them with colorful banners.

    • They offer food and alms to the monks to make merit.

    • The younger pays respect to the elders by pouring scented water on their palms.

  • Would you please tell me more?
    • April 13th is called ‘Sangkhan Long’ day and considered as the last day of the year.
    • In the morning, people will light firecrackers to chase away the evil from the past year.

    • In the evening, a parade for the Chiang Mai’s significant Buddha statute will be organized around the city.

  • How about April 14th? / How about the following three days?
  • What do people do on April 14th/.....................?
    • April 14th is called ‘Nao’ day so that swear words and rude manners are prohibited to avoid bad luck for a whole year.
    • April 15th is either called ‘Phaya’ day or “beginning of the new era”. So they offer food and alms to the monks to make merit.

    • The younger pays respect to the elders by pouring scented water on their palms.
    • 15th is a day for making merit and paying respect to living parents and older relatives.

    • 16th is called ‘Pak Pi’ day. It is a day for people to pour water on the hands of the abbot from different temples.

    • 17th is called ‘Pak Duan’ day. On that day people will clean themselves to symbolize cleaning bad luck away.
  • When can people splash water?
  • When do people throw the water to each others?

    • Every afternoon as long as it is hot.
    • Make sure you don’t hurt people.
  • When do people take part in a procession of the revered Buddha image?
    • In the evening of April 13th, or on the Sangkhan Long day
  • Where will you suggest to attend the water splashing ?

  • Where is the good place to join the water splashing ?
  • Where should I go for the water splashing ?
    • I would suggest you go to Tha Pae gate.

    • You can take a gun water
    • You should take a small bowl
