Let's Role Play with your partners about Dos and Don'ts



Post Tasks (50 mins)
1) Role Play: (25 mins)
Play the roles of a tour guide and a tourist in pairs. In the situation, the tour guide introduces the do's and don'ts for visiting a temple.
2) Peer Review (25 mins)
Play back two randomly chosen role plays on the blog produced by the students. Give feedbacks on the Role Play according to the rubrics.

Let's practice the language use for Dos and Don'ts

Take turns with your partners construct questions and answers in order to practice the language focus rely on the given pictures. Then write short answer in the blog.
Example: The tourist wants to know whether or not s/he can take photo with a monk so s/he asks a tour guide.


Tourist: Can I take photo with a monk?
Guide:  Yes, but if you are a women, you shouldn't touch the monk or stay very close to him.


Now, it is your turn to create questions and answers relevant to the following 5 situations.

1. A tourist wants to know how to dress when visiting a Buddhist Thai temple, so s/he talks to a tour guide.

2) Language Focus:
  • Good morning ladies and gentlemen, today I will be your tour guide.


  • Are we going to visit a temple this morning?


    • Yes, that’s right.

  • Are there any rules we should know about?


    • You should dress properly.

    • Please take off your shoes.
    • Please remove your shoes

    • Take off your hat and fold your umbrella before entering the building.

  • What do you mean by ‘dress properly’?
    • You should wear shirts with sleeves and trousers or skirts that cover your knees.

    • You shouldn't bare your shoulders.

  • What should men wear when visiting a Buddhist Thai temple?
    • Men should wear a shirt preferably one with sleeves
    • They should wear something that cover at least their knees


  •  What should women wear when visiting a Buddhist Thai temple?
    • They should remember to keep shoulders covered and to leave spaghetti straps in revealing tank tops at home.

  •  How about shoes? Can I wear sandals or flip flops?




    • Sure, because anyway we need to remove our shoes before entering a temple.
    • Yes, you can because anyway we need to remove our shoes before entering a temple.
  • Can I take a photo inside the temple?
    • Yes, you can, but you shouldn't use flash.

  • May I take a photo with the monk?
    • Yes, but if you are a woman, you shouldn't touch the monk or stay very close to him.


  • Can I take a photo here?
    • No, because there are signs saying ‘No photo and video’.

    • If you take a photo you will be in trouble.
  • Can I touch the Buddha image to have some good luck?

    • No, the sign says ‘Do not touch’.
  • Anything else?
    • Do not shout or talk loud.

    • Please be quiet.
    • Do not show too much affection in the temple like kissing or hugging.

  • May we move in?
    • Let’s go.

Let's Role Play about giving suggestions to your tourists what to wear when visiting a Thai Buddhist temple.

You are going to watch a video clip, in which a tour guide and a tourist talk about the do's and don'ts for visiting a Buddhist Thai temple. Watch the video clip and fill in the blanks with the appropriate words. After that, video tape your role play of the video in pairs.

Lesson 1 Songkran Festival_Language Focus

Let's practice Role Play using the following language focus as follows:

 Language Focus:
  • What does ‘Songkran’ mean?
    • It is a Sanskrit word, meaning the transformation of the zodiac signs.

  • When is the Songkran Festival?

    • It is on April 13th to 17th.
  • ·       How long do people in northern Thailand celebrate Songkran Festival?
  •     How long does the Songkran Festival lasts?

    • It usually lasts five days from April 13th to 17th.
    • We celebrate the festival for five days from April 13th to 17th.

  • How do people celebrate the Songkran Festival? / What do people do to celebrate the Songkran Festival? / What do people do on the following three days?
    • They clean their houses.

    • They take part in a procession of the revered Buddha image.

    • They carry sand to a nearby temple to form pagodas and decorate them with colorful banners.

    • They offer food and alms to the monks to make merit.

    • The younger pays respect to the elders by pouring scented water on their palms.

  • Would you please tell me more?
    • April 13th is called ‘Sangkhan Long’ day and considered as the last day of the year.
    • In the morning, people will light firecrackers to chase away the evil from the past year.

    • In the evening, a parade for the Chiang Mai’s significant Buddha statute will be organized around the city.

    • 15th is a day for making merit and paying respect to living parents and older relatives.

    • 16th is called ‘Pak Pi’ day. It is a day for people to pour water on the hands of the abbot from different temples.

    • 17th is called ‘Pak Duan’ day. On that day people will clean themselves to symbolize cleaning bad luck away.

    • Every afternoon as long as it is hot.
    • Make sure you don’t hurt people.

    • In the evening of April 13th, or on the Sangkhan Long day
